The USMNT's Haji Wright managed to get one back, but Denzel Dumfries quickly restored his team's two-goal advantage.

Due to Saturday's loss, the USMNT's 20-year search to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals will continue.

The Netherlands will compete against either Argentina or Australia to go to the tournament's semi-finals.

"Margins matter in a game like that. And if you give a good team three to four chances when you play them, they'll score three to four goals.

The boys have proven they can compete with some of the top teams in the world, and I'm proud of them. We've come a long way, and we'll keep working hard. Though we're not there yet, we're getting close.

"It's great; there will be more growth the more time we spend together. But for games like this, we need to mature. When it boils down to the details, the more knowledgeable side won today.

"(Berhalter) patted my head and instructed me to maintain a dignified demeanour. We should leave with pride in the work we accomplished.

"The fan response has been incredible. Without the backing of the American supporters, both abroad and at home, it would not have been feasible.
