Kevin Magnussen took his first career Formula One pole position in Friday qualifying for Saturday's sprint race at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, in his 100th race for the Haas team.

Magnussen's first-place finish in the top ten shootouts earned him a surprise pole position for the Brazilian GP sprint race.

Max Verstappen will start alongside Magnussen on the front row for the sprint race after locking up at Turn 8 on his final Q3 lap before the rain and red flag, while Russell finished third despite his spin and beaching in the gravel.

Russell's lap kept him ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, who qualified fourth despite missing the track activities on Thursday due to food poisoning.

Meanwhile, Ferrari had a nightmare Q3, sending Charles Leclerc out on intermediate tires before the rain arrived and failing to call him in before beginning a timed lap. Leclerc will begin the sprint race in tenth place.
