One of the most well-known soccer reporters in the country, Grant Wahl, passed away early on Saturday while covering Argentina vs. Netherlands' World Cup match in Qatar. He was 48.

Wahl reportedly slumped back in his seat in the press box at Lusail Iconic Stadium during extra time, and the US journalists sat next to him reportedly asked for help.

The reporters said that emergency personnel arrived extremely fast, and they subsequently learned that Wahl had passed away.

The World Cup organising committee stated in a statement that "he got urgent emergency medical care on site, which continued until he was taken by ambulance to Hamad General Hospital." The statement left out a cause of death.

"We are in contact with the US Embassy and the appropriate local authorities to make sure the corpse is returned in accordance with the family's wishes," the statement reads.

This was Wahl's sixth World Cup to cover. He announced his visit to a hospital in Qatar on his website on Monday.

Finally, my body gave up on me. You may get that way after three weeks of little sleep, high stress, and a lot of work, Wahl wrote.

"On the night before the USA-Netherlands game, what had been a cold for the previous ten days morphed into something more serious, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new degree of pressure and agony.

"I went into the medical clinic at the major media centre today, but I didn't have Covid (I test here frequently), and they said I probably had bronchitis. After receiving an antibiotic course and some potent cough medicine, I started feeling a little bit better within a few hours. However: "No good."

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, stated. "His reporting on the international game will be missed by everyone who follow it, and his enthusiasm for football was enormous."
