MEMORIAL DAY AS WELL AS VETERANS DAY BOTH HONOR

  2. The Great War came to an end when an armistice was signed on the eleventh hour
    of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. One year later, President Wilson
    established the first Armistice Day national observance, which included parades and
    open celebrations honouring millions of American World War I heroes. Armistice Day
    was declared a federal holiday by the Congress in 1938 as “a day to be dedicated to
    the cause of world peace.” In 1954, the Congress changed the name of the holiday to
    “Veterans Day” in recognition of all those who have given their lives in the line of
    duty.
  3. This year, dozens of large businesses and retailers are giving veterans and active-
    duty service members discounts and freebies. Here is a list of some of the events
    that will occur on November 11.
  4. Any veteran or active duty service member can get a free lunch combo from Little
    Caesars from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  5. Any veteran or active duty service member may get a free tall coffee from Starbucks
    all day long.

Each veteran or active-duty service member can obtain a complimentary meal from the
restaurant’s special menu by purchasing a beverage at Hooters.

 On Friday, all veterans and active-duty personnel will receive a free doughnut and
coffee from Krispy Kreme.
 Veterans and active-duty personnel who visit Olive Garden will receive a
complimentary dinner from its special menu, which includes the restaurant’s endless
breadsticks.
 Red Lobster is offering out their Walt’s Favourites Shrimp, fries, and drinks from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Civil War served as the basis for Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, on the other hand, is dedicated to remembering those who lost their lives
while serving in the US military. In the same way that Veterans Day was eventually
expanded to include those who perished in all conflicts, it was initially established to honour
those who served in the Civil War.
1. According to history professor Matthew Dennis, Memorial Day was first observed on
May 30 and was known as Decoration Day. On that day, those who perished in battle
had their graves adorned. People who fought in the Civil War, both for the Union
and the Confederacy.
2. It is thought that Waterloo, New York, is where the annual custom of placing flags
and flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers first began. Today, that custom is still
practised across the nation.
3. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Congress changed the official
holiday’s date to the last Monday in May over a century later, in 1971.
